How to Use Sweet Potato Flour
As you can imagine, it is not the same as your basic white, all purpose flour. Some of the biggest questions we get are around how to use sweet potato flour and tips and tricks when cooking with it. This page was created to address some of those questions and to give you the tools to easily use vegetable flours as a wonderful ingredient in your kitchen.
Sweet Potato Flour Cooking Tips & Tricks
Flavor Profile: Sweet Potato Flour has a naturally sweet yet complimentary flavor for both sweet and savory applications. While it does not taste like a baked sweet potato, it has a very distinct sweet potato taste!
You may be surprised how much flavor can vary depending on the recipe. What we love about sweet potato flour is that it works to enhance whatever the primary ingredient in a dish is. To tone it down, we blend with more mild flours but do not be afraid to let it shine as the star of the recipe!
Blend with other Flours: Sweet Potato Flour is great when mixed with nut flours, rice flours and traditional white, wheat or gluten-free all-purpose flours. You can use up to 25% sweet potato flour in recipes as a blend.
It can also be used as a total substitute in quick breads, muffins and cookies. Cakes, breads and other baked goods need a little more structure with gluten or a binding agent so its best to blend there!
Bind it Up: All of our flours are naturally gluten-free. Because gluten is a structural protein, it is what holds things together in cooking. Don't let this intimidate you though! For recipes that you need a little more stick (crusts, doughs, breaders, etc.), simply add a tiny amount of xanthan gum to create that bind. You only need a very small amount - about 1/2 tsp to start - to achieve optimal results. Do not add too much or it can become gooey and gummy. You will see in our recipes that we sometimes include it where needed, but not regularly.
Lower the Temperature: Sweet Potato Flour is a pure ingredient and has a lower burning and cooking point. Therefore, it is best if baked at temperatures not to exceed 350 degrees F.
For recipes that call for a higher temperature, simply adjust the cooking time a bit to have the perfect outcome!
